Born in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, Hayes studied at Louisiana State University in the School of Environmental Design. He worked as a landscape architect before moving to New York to study interior design at Parsons School of Design. He went to work at Bray-Schaible Design in 1982, and four years later established his own office, which is now in it s fifteenth year. In January 2000, Hayes was named one of the AD 100 by Architectural Digest magazine.
