Andree Putman - Designer Of The Week - June 2008 - 3rd Week

Andree Putman

The daughter of a pianist, born in Paris in 1925.And one of the world’s leading contemporary interior designers.

She began to work in the 1960s as a journalist for the design magazine ‘l’oeil’ (eye) and to write the column ‘decoration’ in the ‘les cahiers de elle’ and had a career as a marketing consultant in the fashion world.
 
Ms. Putman may be best known for having assembled a collection of 20th century modern furnishings to be reproduced by her firm ‘ecart international’.

Andree Putman designed the interior of shops for yves st. laurent, karl lagerfeld, thierry mugler, azzedine alaia, cartier, ebel, mannequins for barneys, interiors of the concorde for air france.

When ian schrager and steve rubell opened morgans hotel, designed by Ms. putman, in 1984, the notion of the ‘boutique hotel’ was born. Many hotels followed, among them ‘wasserturm’ in cologne and ‘pershing hall’ hotel in paris.

In 1997 she founded a new firm in her own name designing products carrying her signature including furniture, and home accessories.

Alessandro Mendini - Architect Of The Week - June 2008 - 2nd Week

Alessandro Mendini, architect, was born in Milan in 1931. He has edited the reviews Casabella, Modo and Domus. His own work and that produced with the Atelier Alchimia have been the subject of monographic studies in various languages.

He is especially interested in neo-modern and contemporary design. He works on products, furniture, interiors, installations. He works with international firms such as Alessi, Philips, Swarovski and Swatch, and acts as a consultant for various companies, including some in the Far East, directing their image and design policies.

 He is an honorary member of the Bezabel Academy of Arts and Design in Jerusalem; has won the Compasso d’Oro Design Award, the Architectural League’s Award in New York and is a Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres in France.

 His works are on display in various museums and private collections.

Groninger museum - The Netherlands.

The new Groninger Museum is not merely a casing for art; it is a work of art in itself, a principle that is occurring to an increasing extent in contemporary (museum) architecture. It is an artwork in the centre of the city, traversed by public space where passers-by are directly confronted by all kinds of works of art.

Several designers and architects have participated with Mr Mendini to finally put together this amazing experience.

Carlo Dal Bianco - Designer Of The Week - June 2008 - 2nd week

Carlo Dal BiancoIn a decade-long campaign to make traditional Venetian glass “BISAZZA” has collaborated with some of the world’s leading creative talents.

Carlo Dal Bianco, 43, lives and works in Vicenza. Dal Bianco is a meticulous architect with a liking for classical forms, clean, sophisticated lines, and the style of Gio Ponti and Bauhaus. After working in the field of monument restoration, he began collaborating with Bisazza in 2001 on a project to remodel industrial spaces. Since then, he has created a significant portion of the new mosaic collections, such as the Rete and Righe decorations and the new Oro Bianco versions. Since 2003 he has directed the Bisazza Design Studio.

 When Carlo Dal Bianco was named director of Bisazza’s design studio he took on the task of unifying the brand image via design of the company’s eight showrooms worldwide.

Carlo Dal Bianco won the second Elle Decoration International Award for the “pied de poule” floor decoration.
