RMJM and Hillier Announce Merger
In a milestone event for the architectural design industry, RMJM, one of the world’s largest architectural practices based in the UK, and Hillier, one of the largest architectural design firms in the U.S., today announced plans to merge their firms, creating a combined entity with unprecedented depth of talent and global reach.
The merged firm creates a super-studio positioned to deliver holistic architectural solutions anywhere in the world, with offices in 16 cities across North America, Europe, Asia and the Middle East, approximately 1,000 design professionals and more than $15 billion in construction value of buildings currently under design.
In North America, the firm will be branded as RMJM Hillier and form the North American business of the RMJM Group, with offices in New York City, Philadelphia, Princeton, NJ, and Washington, DC.

The new Complex of building are situated within new landscaped public gardens adjacent to holyrood palaces, at the east end the royal mile in Edinburgh’s Old Town.
The Assembly building, MSP building and restored Queenberry House have all received ‘Excellent’ BREEAM ratings.

Erik Magnussen - Designer Of The Week - April 2008 - 4th Week

Erik MagnussenErik Magnussen was born in 1940 in Copenhagen. Educated as a ceramist at The School of Applied Arts and Design - graduated with a silver medal in 1960. For a number of years he worked for Bing and Gr?ndahl and among the latest works are furniture for Engelbrechts, door handles for Franz Schneider Brakel Gmbh, tabletop in pewter for Royal Selangor, tabletop in stainless steel and plastic for A/S Stelton, porcelain lamps for Licht und Form and furniture for Fritz Hansen A/S and Paustian A/S.
Erik Magnussen’s designs are exhibited in museums throughout the world and he has received The Lunning Prize in 1967 and The Furniture Prize in 1977. In 1983 he was chosen “Designer Of The Year” by The Danish Design Council and his products have several times received the ID-Prize by The Danish Society Of Industrial Design.
Erik Magnussen received the Bindesb?ll Medal in 1996 and he has received grants from the Ole Haslund Fund, The Royal Jueweller A. Michelsen’s Anniversary Fund and Knud V. Engelhardt’s Memorial Fund. In 1997 Erik Magnussen was awarded the “Rote Punkt” in the “Design Innovations “97”competition held by Design Zentrum Nordrhein-Westfalen and he won the “Good Design Gold Prize” awarded by Japan Industrial Design Promotion Organisation. Erik Magnussen has been given the British design distinction Royal Designer for Industry (RDI) in December 2001.

When Jim De Stefano returned to his home town at age 50 after a 27 year career of worldwide architectural design and management practice. he wanted to reconnect with his youths passion: the art and craft of designing buildings. Straight from founding and managing the 250-pesron London office of one of the world’s largest architecture firms, he set up a one - man shop in a former marine warehouse, which is where D+P thrives today as one of Chicago’s largest design practices.
Jim plays an active role in the firms design direction, bringing to each project his insight and knowledge acquired through 45 years of master planning and design commissions in major U.S. cities, the U.K. and Middle East. Committed to creating a vital urban environment through design, he has taken on assignments with unique design and technical challenges, often leading the profession in the use of ground-breaking building technology. Materials and management systems that permit the development of challenging sites and programs.
Jim Played a central role in steering new construction in the Chicago Public Schools’ $3 billion Capital Improvement Program and in the design of a new Terminal 6 at O’Hare International Airport, the largest design-build contract in Chicago’s history. Jim earned his architecture degree from Illinois Institute of Technology.
